Summer Reading

47 by Walter Mosley is about a young slave boy named Forty-Seven, who meets Tall John. A magical healer who has come for Forty-seven. John and Forty-Seven must escape the plantation but they have to battle the Wall in order to do so.

Forty-Seven is dealing with external problems throughout the book. For example he has problems with slave number Eighty-four. A slave Forty-Seven is working with in the fields. On page 31 it says, "She replied by pinching my arm till it hurt terribly and repeated the words, pulling a cotton ball and pushing it into her big burlap sack. I learned right away to watch her gestures as she spoke. That way I could keep from getting pinched. As it was the place she tweaked hurt for over a week.". This means that Forty-Seven did have problems with Eighty-four while working. Another example is when Forty-Seven got punished and got whipped 12 times because of Tall John standing up to Forty-Seven's master and calling him by his name.
